Aluminum Foil for MS Sealant

Currently, the market is suffering common problems such as spotting, bulging, and aluminum corrosion when aluminum foil packaging is used for MS adhesives or alcohol-type adhesives. These issues occur at a very high frequency and have led to liability disputes between packaging manufacturers and adhesive manufacturers. Based on our repeated experiments and analysis, the main reasons are as follows:

1. The problem of spotting, bulging, and aluminum corrosion after packaging are related to coupling agents containing methanol and amino groups, such as KH-792, KH540, KH550, EB1146 or similar products, as well as plasticizers. The mentioned products above are small-molecule crosslinkers with characteristic of high reactivity. High temperatures greatly speedup the reaction, creating unstable reaction factors after packaging.

2. The properties and capabilities of foil packages are suited for neutral adhesives. Their structure has no resistance to methanol, amino groups, or plasticizers. Methanol and amino groups can easily get through the plastic layers and come into contact with the aluminum layer. When the temperature rises, the increasing concentration of methanol and amino groups will speedup the reaction with aluminum, forming pitting and bulging, and further corroding through the foil to cause adhesive problems.

3. After the adhesive is packed in the aluminum foil, the following chemical reaction occurs: AL + NH3·H2O → AL(OH)3↓ + NH3↑. AL(OH)3 is the black powder at the pitting spots; NH3↑ and some other gases formed by the reaction (some include H2↑) are those who bulging the sausage. Some of these gases are flammable.

4. Based on the above analysis, ordinary aluminum foil cannot completely prevent the reactions caused by contact between methanol, amino groups, plasticizers, and aluminum layer.

5. If choosing ordinary aluminum foil to pack MS adhesives or alcohol-type adhesives, please conduct fully tests before placing orders. Our company assumes no responsibility for any spotting, bulging, or aluminum corrosion caused by incorrect selection of foil.

6. In addition, after repeated testing and verification, our company has developed a dedicated foil specifically for packing MS adhesives and alcohol-type adhesives. It effectively blocks the methanol, amino groups, and plasticizers. This product has been in use for more than three years and not any problems such as spotting, bulging, or aluminum corrosion have occurred up to now.
